Welcome to choir at Lineville! I am very excited to be working with your child this year. This monthly communication is intended to help keep parents informed on what is happening inside the choral classroom. Each edition will include important reminders & announcements, a list of important upcoming dates, and highlights of what the students have been working on. You can always find archived copies of the newsletters on my website http://linevillechoir.weebly.com/linevillechoir
Choir T-shirts - Choir shirts were handed out to students this week. Please make sure your child has brought their shirt home.
Solo Opportunity - Students will have the opportunity to tryout for a small group solo in 'One Call Away' for our concert in January. 6th Grade tryouts will take place on November 14 & 15. 5th Grade Try outs will take place on November 16 & 17. All tryouts will take place during W.I.N. Practice materials can be found in Schoology in the 'Choir Music' folder. Students will need to signup for an audition slot. They can sign-up during choir the week of November 7. They will need a pass from me in order to attend the audition.
Veterans Day Assembly - The 6th Grade Choir has begun preparation for their joint performance of 'My Country 'Tis of Thee' with the 6th Grade Band & 6th Grade Orchestra. The students have been working hard to learn one of our nation's most beloved patriotic songs and will get to perform the song with the band and orchestra at the Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 10. Students are encourage to wear red, white, and/or blue next Thursday.
Grades - Students have been assessed on the following standards for 1st Quarter:
- Sings with accuracy
- Sings with correct technique
- Identifies and applies musical symbols and standard terms
- Contributes vocally to the performing ensemble
- Interacts in a productive, responsible manner
You will be able to view your child's grades in Power School when 1st Quarter report cards come out. However, the best place to view your child's choir grades are in Schoology. Each assessment the children take are recorded in Schoology along with the rubrics for the assessment and any comments or feedback I may have provided. Ask you child to show you the purple 'Grades' folder in Schoology.
Two last thought about grades... First, I would like to remind you that a '3' means that your child has mastered the skill the have been asked to demonstrate. With most of my assessments a 4 is not possible. Even when a 4 is possible it is not the goal. A 4 means the student has exceeded the expectations. Please remember that it is a 3 that shows that your child has mastered the skill.
Second, It is not my goal for each and every child to achieve a 3 on every assessment that is given. What is most important to me is that your child shows progress over the course of the year or their 2 years at Lineville. It is important to remember that children learn at different rates and just because a child doesn't master the skill on the first try does not mean that they will never master the skill. When following grades in choir look for progress over the course of the year, not necessarily 3s.
