REMIND - If you have not yet signed up for Remind, I highly encourage you to do so. I will be using Remind to send quick reminders at concert time. To sign-up, follow the directions below. Make sure you sign-up for the correct grade level. If you have children in both 5th and 6th grade choir, you will want to sign-up for both groups.

VOLUNTEERING - An email was sent out last week regarding volunteer opportunities for the Winter Concert. Thank you to all of the parents who have already volunteered! I am still in need of 1 parent to record the concert. It really is a very simple job - you do not need to worry about messing it up. All of my volunteers receive reserved seating for themselves and their family. Click here if you are willing to record the concert.
WHEN & WHERE - The winter concert will take place at Bay Port in the auditorium @ 7:30pm on Thursday, January 11. The concert should be between 15 & 20 minutes in length.
ARRIVAL - Students should arrive to Bay Port @ 7:10. Please enter the building through the Auditorium doors. Students should leave their jackets with their parent(s) and go back stage to line-up on the risers.
EARLY ARRIVAL - Parents - there is absolutely no benefit to arriving early. The other 6th grade concert is taking place immediately before your concert. Arriving early will only create difficulties with parking as well as congestion inside the building. In addition the doors to the auditorium will not open for you to take a seat until 7:10 (20 minutes before concert time). Space inside the building is limited so I ask that you please do not arrive prior to 7:10. There will not be room for people to wait inside the building for the auditorium doors to open. I also can not have children arriving prior to 7:10 as I am not able to supervise the students. I will be busy re-setting the stage and auditorium for their concert. Lastly, it is imperative that people do not arrive while the other 6th grade concert is still taking place. Please consider these things before choosing to arrive at Bay Port prior to 7:10. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation!
WHAT TO WEAR - Students should wear their black choir t-shirts to the concert. They can pretty much wear what they want with their shirts. Jeans, shorts (jean, khaki, dress, plaid), leggings, dress pants, khaki pants, skirts, etc are all acceptable. Yes - it is ok for the boys to wear shorts - it is very warm on stage! Students may wear a long sleeve shirt underneath their choir t-shirt, however, please keep in mind, it is very warm on stage. There are a few things I do ask you to avoid if at all possible. Below is the list.
- Athletic pants
- Athletic shorts
- High heeled shoes
MISSING CHOIR SHIRTS - Please do not panic if you have a t-shirt emergency the night of the concert. I have extra shirts that I bring with me to every concert and loan out to students who need them. Should your child borrow a shirt I will need the shirt returned within the week.
AFTER THE CONCERT - Students will be dismissed into the auditorium after the concert. Once you find your child you are free to leave.
Oh the things we've learned!
Besides working on our concert music we have begun reviewing sight-reading melodies and our reading rhythm skills. Sight-reading is looking at a melody and being able to sing the melody without ever having heard the melody before without the help of the piano or myself singing with them! Currently we are reading melodies that are written out it solfege (Do Re Mi...). We will transition back to reading melodies from a staff sometime 3rd quarter once the students are more comfortable with sight-reading.
The students have also begun reviewing how to read rhythms using the 'takadimi' reading system. Right now we are reviewing on quarter notes, eighth notes, & quarter rests and will soon be adding eighth rests to the mix.
We now have all of our concert music learned and are working on memorizing our songs and getting comfortable singing our parts with the piano accompaniment! The kids are getting really excited to perform their music for you!
Below are some videos of the kids showing off their new sight-reading and rhythm reading skills.
